MarketOrders at the International Jewellery London (IJL) 2019

The International Jewellery London (IJL) is the pre-eminent annual destination for the best of British fine jewellery, as well as leading brands from around the globe.

It is the global meeting place for the jewellery trade so it’s only natural that MarketOrders attended. Our COO & Co-Founder Sukhi Jutla was also asked to speak on a panel about The Future of Fine Jewellery.

In this blog post, she gives her personal take on the IFL and the key takeaways points and trends she learned as well as an overview of her panel talk.

About IJL No alt text provided for this image

The IFL is an annual event held in London over the course of 3 days. There were a number of seminars, talks and workshops talking about the new trends and technologies emerging in the jewellery industry.

The exhibition featured a catwalk show showing the latest jewellery designs, an inspiration theatre talking about how to embrace technologies to improve customer experiences and the knowledge Hub where I was speaking.

The key themes at IFL focused on:

  • The future of lab-grown diamonds
  • The Future of Fine Jewellery
  • Jewellery trends for 2020
  • How to embrace systems and tech to deliver the ultimate shopping experience
  • Sustainability in the jewellery trade

MarketOrders point of viewKrystian Ozog also came along and he looks after our customers at MarketOrders as our Chief Customer Care Officer

Walking around the Olympia exhibition centre with the most beautiful and dazzling jewellery collections looking back at you made me think even deeper about how MarkterOrders can best serve the industry and more specifically, help our retailers.

Almost everyone I spoke to said their biggest issues were with not being able to communicate enough to the end consumer.

With most of the products being created by designers, suppliers and manufacturers who are often removed from the consumer on the high street, it can be hard to see what products are selling and why some items don’t sell.

Without some sort of communication with the end consumer, it can be difficult to truly provide what the consumer needs.

This is why MarketOrders exists; to bridge that gap. By only placing orders from retailers, suppliers will only produce items that are needed.

Retailers are best placed to place orders as they face off to the customer on a daily basis. They understand what sells and what won’t.

By placing personalised orders on-demand, retailers can be confident that they can sell their stock and not have to meltdown items that don’t sell or be stuck with inventory on shelves.

The Future of Fine Jewellery Panel

If you missed my panel talk here are the key highlights from my panel.

I was joined by Naomi Newton-Sherlock, the Creative Director at Domino and Daisy Grice, a jewellery designer. Chairing the panel was Asha Pitt from the Professional Jeweller.

Note: MarkeOrders has a profile feature in Septembers edition of the Professional Jewellery which you can check out here on page 78.

On Millenials and jewellery trends….No alt text provided for this image

  • Millennials shop in different ways. They are not looking to buy a product but an experience. So can retailers keep up with these changing consumer demands?
  • It’s no longer seen as fashionable to buy expensive jewellery if demi-stones look just as good and are half the price. Millennials are image-conscious and want to be able to keep up with changing fashion trends without the costs involved.
  • Consumers and Millenials, in particular, are looking for convenience and personalisation. They are not buying a product but experiences as they value experiences more highly.

What advancements should the jewellery industry be embracing? Our visionary CEO of MarketOrders was also in attendance at the IFL to look for new trends.

  • Retailers are no longer selling a product but an experience.
  • Consumers value individual attention, customization and personalisation as opposed to mass-market customer service.
  • Retailers and designers need to think about how best to reach their customers and listen to what they are asking for

When it comes to responsible jewellery manufacture, do consumers really care?

  • If given the choice, most consumers would opt for the responsibly sourced jewellery but retailers say this is still a small proportion of their sales simply because not enough suppliers are providing this due to the extra costs involved.
  • Perhaps if consumers voted with the pounds in their pockets then things could potentially change.
  • However, responsibly sourced jewellery is still more expensive and not enough consumers feel they want to pay extra for this.

Demi-fine / semi-fine jewellery continues to grow as a market segment; should fine jewellers be concerned?

  • Not necessarily. Most retailers are now stocking an array of different types of jewellery so that they can cater to all consumers.
  • In order to stay ahead it is vital retailers notice and adapts to consumers changing demands otherwise they risk being left behind.

Q) How can technology improve the consumer experience and industry margins?

  • Without a doubt, it is imperative the industry embraces technology to better serve their consumers. Our Chief Customer Care Officer, Krystian Ozog relaxes on a chair after a busy conference!
  • Retailers need to have omni-channels, different ways to reach their consumers and give them different options to see and buy their products.
  • Make the purchase an experience and not just a transaction.
  • The jewellery industry is no longer competing with other jewellery but with other products. Jewellery used to be a popular gifting idea but now it’s competing with the latest iPhone, tech gadget or luxury holiday!

I hope you enjoyed this roundup summary of IFL, looking forward to next year!

MarketOrders Co-Founder meets easyJet Founder!

MarketOrders Co-Founder Sukhi Jutla meets easyJet Founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou

It’s not every day that you bump into a billionaire but trust our co-founder Sukhi to do so!

As many of you may know, a few weeks ago in May Sukhi was invited to Keynote speak at the Digital Enterprise Show (DES) in Madrid, where MarketOrders also walked away with an award for Digital Innovation.

En route to Spain, Sukhi bumped into Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, who is a British Cypriot entrepreneur best known for setting up easyJet.

Here is Sukhi’s first-hand account:

No one really likes hanging out at airports but for entrepreneurs, it can be golden time to catch up on emails and social media.

Other times, it’s also great to just wander around the terminal and that is exactly what I decided to do as I waited to board my flight to Madrid to keynote at The Digital Enterprise show (DES).

As I walked past WH Smiths lo and behold I saw a very familiar face! It was a round face with a familiar smile and I could see this person intently perusing the phone charging section of the store.

As an entrepreneur, I have devoured various articles and books on the most successful business people and billionaires in an effort to learn from their journeys.

So when I saw Sir Stelios, I went straight up to him, held out my hand and introduced myself to him. He took one look at me, chuckled and said ‘ You must be an entrepreneur’.

I asked him why he would say that and he said ‘’because it takes one to know one!’’

He was delightful, taking a few minutes to take a photo with me and learn about what I am creating with MarketOrders.

He wished me the very best as we parted ways and said ‘Keep up the great work’.

MARKETORDERS COO PART OF THE MAYOR NEW SKILLS BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP

Mayor unveils new skills business partnership

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has unveiled a new group of leading figures from across the capital’s businesses who will help him shape London’s skill system to better the needs of the capital’s employers.

His new Skills for Londoners Business Partnership brings together representatives from a range of industries to play an active role in informing future skills provision in London. It will work with the Mayor to help London’s employers access the skills they need today and in the future.

The Partnership will also advise the Mayor on how skills and education provision can help businesses access talent, particularly in response to a range of challenges including Brexit and increasing automation.

The Mayor will also publish a new Skills and Employment Vision later this year, which will be closely linked to his Local Industrial Strategy (which is due to be published at the same time).

The Business Partnership will play an essential role in shaping both documents, which will set out the next steps for delivering on the Mayor’s priorities, new policies to address emerging challenges, and will make the case for more funding to be devolved to London.

The Mayor believes a city-wide skills system that is responsive to the needs of London’s economy is crucial to meeting the needs of London’s employers and residents. The need for such a system has been made particularly acute given Brexit and the government’s recent Immigration White Paper, both of which risk undermining London’s growth and access to a future pipeline of talent from Europe and around the world.

The Partnership – which met at City Hall for the first time this week – aims to:

  • improve London’s skills system to better meet the needs of employers, businesses and the London economy
  • increase skills investment and workforce development in London’s industries to meet the demands of the global economy
  • improve information and data on skills needs from employers and ensure the most accurate/reliable data is used to inform skills provision in London

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “In June 2018, my Skills for Londoners strategy laid out my ambition to create a city for all Londoners, in which everyone can access the skills they need to succeed in a thriving economy. “Involving London’s employers and businesses to meet this ambition is at the heart of this: today I’m delighted to announce my new Skills for Londoners Business Partnership, made up of leading figures from businesses of all sizes and sectors, who share my passion for supporting London’s talent. I look forward to working with them as they play a central role in our efforts to maintain London’s global position as a great place to work, invest and grow a business.”

Deputy Mayor for Business and Chair of the Business Partnership, Rajesh Agrawal, said: “It is an honour to chair the Skills for Londoners Business Partnership and to be working with such exceptional business representatives. Our first meeting marks an important step in bringing London’s employers and businesses together, not just to gain a better understanding of the challenges, but also to act collectively to create a diverse and skilled workforce fit for the future.”

Film and TV Executive at Film London, Nahrein Kemp, said: “I am really looking forward to working with the Mayor and his team on skills challenges facing London.  London is one of the most diverse cities in the world and the Mayor’s skills policies and programmes provide an excellent opportunity to influence change and foster collaboration across employers, skills providers and Londoners themselves.”

Director of People Strategy, Barts Health NHS Trust, Aurea Jones, said: “I welcome the establishment of the Mayor of London’s Skills for Londoners Business Partnership and am pleased to be able to bring the wealth of experience that the NHS has as a major employer to the table.  The Business Partnership will begin a collaborative exchange of knowledge and innovation between employers, particularly as we grapple with the difficult task of navigating the impact of Brexit and the pressures this will place on London’s current and future workforce.

Founder and Chief Operating Officer of MarketOrders, Sukhi Jutla, said: “I am pleased to be a part of the Mayor’s Skills for Londoners Business Partnership. This is great initiative to support London’s employers, including SMEs and micro-businesses, to access the talent and skills they need.

Founder of Optimity, Anthony Impey MBE, said: ‘I welcome the Mayor’s commitment to creating a skills offer that works for both Londoners and employers. I look forward to working with the Partnership to strengthen London’s apprenticeships offer, building skills for London’s future.

MarketOrders Co-Founder Named as One of the UK’s Top 100 Women in Tech

MarketOrders Co-Founder, Sukhi Jutla, was recently named as one of the UK’s top 100 Women in Tech. She recieved her award on Thursday 31 January during the awards ceremony taking place at the London County Hall, London.

The award’s celebration was an opportunity to meet and network with other winners, sponsors and judges; enjoy a three-course meal, wine and champagne reception to toast achievements.

The evening was facilitated by Kate Russell, BBC Click, Journalist, Tech Reporter and Author. The special guest speaker was Chi Onwurah, Labour MP for Newcastle upon Tyne Central and Shadow Minister for Industrial Strategy, Science and Innovation.

Only two days after receiving its certificate as a Top 100 European Digital Pioneer by The Financial Times and Google, Sukhi Jutla couldn’t be prouder: “I’m honoured to be named as a Top 100 Woman in Tech in the UK. The UK is one of the best places to launch your tech career and I hope this award continues to inspire more women into tech careers and show you can make a huge and lasting impact”.

Since September 2018, WeAreTechWomen has been searching the UK for the best female tech talent in the country. They received over 500 nominations from across the UK and Northern Ireland and 28,000 votes of support from across the globe. The calibre of entries for these awards was exceptional and all of the judges stated how difficult it was to arrive at the shortlist due to the amazing achievements of the nominees.

Vanessa Vallely OBE, Founder of WeAreTechWomen said, “At WeAreTechWomen we have made it our personal mission to shine a spotlight on women working in tech. Our strategic aim is to highlight 500 female future leaders in technology by 2022. The response to this year’s awards has been fantastic and calibre of entries has been outstanding! I am so proud to see so many women in tech recognised for their achievements and look forward to celebrating our winners and their achievements.”

Author of three books and World’s First #1 Bestselling ‘Blockchain’ Author, Sukhi and her team launched MarketOrders in 2016, with the ambition of evolving the gold and diamond jewellery industry using technology.

Two years later, MarketOrders is a running online B2B platform helping independent retail jewellers to get the products they need faster, cheaper and direct from global suppliers. Over a thousand products are available and the platform serves UK retailers and partnered with suppliers in four international locations: Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai and India.

On Wednesday 30 January, Sukhi received a great news from Hounslow Chamber of Commerce and the Hounslow Business Awards team. She and MarketOrders have been shortlisted respectively for Entrepreneur of the Year and Best New Business.

MarketOrders is currently preparing its crowdfunding campaign which will be live in February. The funds will be invested in the expansion of the team, technology development and marketing.

LONDON’S TECH SECTOR PLAYS DOWN BREXIT FEARS

On Oct 11 2018, MarketOrders attended a roundtable hosted by Business Cloud to discuss the impact of Brexit on the UK tech scene.

The event hosted in the capital heard from the heads of fast-growing technology businesses, who remain defiantly optimistic in the face of Brexit uncertainty but admit that recruitment will be a challenge.

Our COO, Sukhi Jutla, commented she was optimistic because entrepreneurs are pragmatic and have a ‘can-do’ attitude, they will adapt and survive. This sentiment was echoed by the other entrepreneurs in the room.

Read the article below which captures the key points raised and discussed:

London’s start-ups will find it more difficult to find and retain technology talent after Brexit – but tech leaders remain upbeat in the face of uncertainty.

That was the general view from BusinessCloud’s latest roundtable discussion in the capital, which was held at KPMG’s offices in Canary Wharf and heard from a panel of experts and tech companies.

Ben Corrigan is co-founder and chief revenue officer at shopping tool Pouch, which has a team of 11, with the majority being non-UK nationals.

The entrepreneur insists that he remains optimistic providing that access to talent isn’t limited following the UK’s exit from the European Union.

“If very talented tech people decide not to come to London because they fear that it’s too difficult then we’ll all be fighting over the same talent,” he said.

“We have to make sure we communicate as a city and a country that we are open and tolerant and that we want the best and the brightest and that has to be then followed through with a political solution.”

Felicia Meyerowitz, CEO of Akoni Hub, admits there will be “a big bump” but is confident that the UK’s economy is “strong”.

She says most of the clients she meets aren’t concerned and all have plans in place.

“It’s been fascinating for me watching the play-out of the media and then going out to speaking to clients and asking them questions,” she said.

“Of course they have actual work to do but there’s no reflection on what I’m seeing in the media.”

MarketOrders at the London Blockchain Summit 2018

Publica’s Author Advisor, Sukhi Jutla, returned to the Olympia Hall in London, where Publica, earlier this year, attended the London Book Fair, to speak on the panel named “How ICOs are Revolutionising Start-Up Funding” at the London Blockchain Summit on Wednesday, 27th June.

The conference was attended by over 4000 people with over 100 events over the 2 days. The room where Sukhi spoke was filled to the brim roughly 200 people attended the panel!

Sukhi talked on the panel about how ICOs are revolutionising the start up funding scene. Sukhi talked about how authors are now operating as start-ups and can use ICOs as a source of start up-funding support.

The audience were amazed when Sukhi reminded them that the eBooks they buy from amazon and other stores don’t belong to them – you purchase only the license to read them – you don’t own them. Sukhi emphasised that Publica allows you to own your book and even better — gift copies away and buy multiple copies. Many had no idea authors could do book ICOs and said it would change the publishing landscape.

We at MarketOrders are also excited about how blockchain can be used in the gold jewellery market.

Stay tuned for more updates regarding blockchain and MarketOrders!
